Blog Inspiration
So during the first lesson of indulging into G324 Media Studies, I personally did some research into last years blogs for some inspiration. Firstly, I was shown what achieved what grad; I therefore started looking into some low achievers to see what not to do firstly (to not slip into any bad habits when it comes to my amazing blog!!) Keeping it anonymous here was the first blog I opened:
First impressions on this was the unorganisation, the headings were in no type of order, the layout was extremely basic and short and nothing jumped out the page to catch my attention. From this I could infer that I did not want my blog to look anything like this! I want colour & gifs.
I therefore wanted more inspiration and decided to look into a blog that achieved good marks. Straight away I could see the difference between the two; this one jumping out the page with creative links, colour and more organisation using titles and dates throughout to represent the learning journey that they went through!
I looked over another high achievers and even though there wasn't bold colours, it was still in good detail, colour coordinated and there was illustrated pictures to follow. The organisation throughout, the clear points, and the development has inspired me hugely! She has embedded mind maps, linked to theories, used links and made creative video blogs throughout which has clearly boosted her marks. She has got written copies of her work backed up incase things went wrong technically; which has taught me to back up my work at all times!
11/09/17:
During todays lesson we was firstly placed into our groups that we will be working with to produce a short film around 5 minutes long. After discussing a brief narrative that we would like our film to be based around I was confident that my group will go far and succeed to the best we possible could.
Firstly, we researched into short films to see what we need to put into place to make the film a success and to look as professional as possible. After this we thought deeply about what we want our films message to be, what genre and sub genres. To do this we used our first task as inspiration as well as researching into some of our favourite films (well films that relate, not my personal favourite, Grease). As well as this, we came up with character traits which fit best with our chosen genre.
We didn't come to a finalised decision during this lesson but we did all have a passion to go down the thriller/drama route as our inspirations that jumped out at us all followed this route.
Short Films
As a part of my research, I believe the it is crucial to study how a narrative can be conveyed effectively in a short period of time. Prior to this study, I analysed into short A2 level films which helped me discover techniques that make a successful film opening. Therefore, I now want to develop my understanding by investigating the techniques used to make a successful short film. By conducting this research, it will help me identify how a complete and developed story can be illustrated successfully in a shorter duration and perhaps I can apply my understanding to our 5 minute short film.
Independently, I did some research into A2 short films the achieved an A grade (as I have very high expectations). Firstly, I watched "choice" as attached below, it blew me away, the cinematography, the editing everything. This therefore set the bar extremely high for what I want my group to achieve this year to achieve in terms of narrative as well as how we produced the product.
The next clip that I watched showed a complete different type of editing to the previous short film, the whole clip was in reverse. This confused the narrative for me until it all came together at the end. This made a discussion within our group as Waseem really liked the idea but some didn't agree due to the confusion. However, it gave us a new outlook onto what we want to do as we adopted the idea of the last 5 minutes of his life, our narrative fitting into this by the main protagonist having suicidal thoughts.
Lastly, I researched into one more short A2 film called "Last Words" this had a similar feel to the previous film "Greed" as it had reverse editing into it, however this time it was more clear to follow as it fitted the narrative more. I then showed my group this due to the previous discussion and they agreed that the narrative needs to be very clear to be most effective.
From this research, I was inspired by what can be achieved in such a short time. I must admit, the idea of a short film of 5 minutes did scare me to start with as I thought that it would be a lot to fit into such a short film. However, after this research I was able to infer that that a lot can be portrayed if the filming and editing is up to a high standard. However, despite the cinematography I do still believe the better the acting the more professional your short film will look.

Changes:
I decided that the films that I did look at originally for my research were very mainstream, everyone knows them sort of thing. I therefore wanted to boost my research and look into a more independent, personal films.
The first one being Mad Max (1979).
The film being set in Australia, in which a vengeful policeman becomes embroiled in a feud with a vicious motorcycle gang. It took place in and around Melbourne and lasted around six weeks.
This film inspired me as the plot is based around a policeman stopping a motorbike gang, which in our film Isaac Wright is out to stop Frank Goodman, a man who has done bad deeds just like the motorbikes. I have learnt through "Mad Max" that as well as having a strong narrative you need to build on the tension to add to the climax you want to achieve. In our case, the twist at the moment they pull up at the house.
The second film I looked into was: Death Wish (1974 ):
This film directed by Michael Winner in 1974 initially sparked my as a narrative very similar to my own, a normal family, father, mother and daughter is initially established during the beginning. The Joanna (mother) and Carol (daughter) are followed home by three men who invade the appartment, posing s deliverymen. They injure Joanna and sexually assault Carol. The rest of the film is then focused on how the father (Paul) goes around trying to encounter with the men, fighting back with homemade weapons. Very similar to our narrative of Isaac gaining justice over the murderer of his family.
Lastly, I looked at: Touch of evil (1958):
The touch of evil didn't really strike me with narrative similarities. However, the evil acts that take place throughout like: murder, kidnapping and police corruption do follow a similar story to ours. Our narrative follows a dark message of sexual assault and clever corruption to how he tracked down the cab driver in the first place.
Narrative Ideas:
The second idea was mostly inspired from a film that we researched into. As a group we was blown away by the whole film and therefore would want to perform something this good. The narrative we found was clear yet extremely indulging, however we discussed this idea and a lot of problems arise to make it look realistic.
Firstly, straight away our group all engaged with a similar narrative, shown in the mind map below, we all liked the idea of having one main protagonist, therefore this narrative fitted our desires almost straight away. (The idea of portraying a negative mental state excited me as I love the camera women role and I have amazing ideas on how to portray a mental state by using cinematography, as well as mine-en-sence obviously). Also, as I drive we want to take advantage of this and therefore would like the ending to involve a car.
Looking back on what we originally thought, it was a massive disaster waiting to happen. One boy walking around, an apocalyptic drama, trying to get 5 minutes of footage!! There was no way.. therefore we now opted for a discussion to buck up our ideas!! (Shown 22/09/17)

18/09/17
During todays lesson the aim was to finalise our idea as a group. However, we came to a brick wall with our idea and found ourselves finding it hard to develop our ideas and struggling how to make an alone male into a 5 minute long film. Therefore, we needed a discussion to take place.
21/09/17
A few days ago I realised that as a group we needed go step it up and come to a conclusion on our finalised idea, we set up a group chat and I messaged the group saying that we need to sort out what was going wrong. We discussed all of our ideas and managed to put together a good narrative that we all ended up agreeing on however, it took a lot of discussion. We then came into school and discussed our ideas further, beginning, middle and end. We put all of our own twist on things. For example, we used Joes idea of a lonely boy, Ems idea of using a car and I then helped develop on the ideas like the ending for example. Joe's initial idea was to make the cab driver get locked into the car but I thought this was to cliche and thought that the build up of panic should arise in the car but then a dozen people start approaching the car and ending on a close up of the lonely boys face looking fulfilled would be more effective on the audience.
Here are some screenshots from the group chat:

MOST SUCCESSFUL LESSON!
Today we all came to realisation that our narrative was good (I now have a passion for the idea) but we needed to add to it. We now have the idea that we are going to be looping our film as we were more caught up in our year 12 coursework, the idea of a film opening, and we wasn't making our narrative clear enough to the audience. Therefore, this lesson we used our idea of the lonely boy and the cab driver but we now want to build up a more of a dramatic idea. We will be using a young character at murder scene of his mother as the opening to give the audience an insight into why the boy is so damaged and what he is setting out to do.
We are now going to focus on building up a trusting relationship between the boy and the cab driver to manipulate, this will allow the cab driver to open up more to the boy about women (hinting at his history), this gives the audience more of an insight into why the boy is in the cab. Therefore, the beginning of the film will give off a sense that the driver will be the character who will be the one doing the killing when in actual fact its the boy who is going to carry out the murder.
We then realised that we needed to explain why the boy had so much anger in him towards the driver (which was because when he was younger his mother was murdered and he wants to go and track down who killed her). With deep discussion we now want to use rapid flashbacks to show how the boy ended up tracking down the cab, using a tracker on his car, ordering the uber ect. I suggested that we should use an object of feature that the cab driver possess that the young boy remembers from the crime scene which insinuates that he was in fact the murderer.
We are going to use trial and error. We know that we want a lot of people approaching the car at the end. (This idea has now completely changed and we found that gathering 20+ people for the ending of our movie at Joe's house would cause a lot of unneeded ago!) However, at the time of filming with our ending, we will film an ending of the boy attacking the driver and we will also film the driver being taken away by people and during editing we want to see what we work most effectively.
Genre Research
After finalising our narrative I decided to do some deep research into the thriller genre. We would hugely benefit from having a wider understanding of the genre during the production of our short film.
A thriller usually consists of a battle between the protagonist character and the antagonist when there is a disruption of the equilibrium. The story then narrates a chain of bad events which builds tension and suspense for a climax for the audience The common narrative would be for the protagonist to restore justice whist the antagonist seeks to destroy it. Wheres in our narrative the protagonist is seeking justice on the cab driver, however we have put our own twist on things to make it seem as if during the beginning the cab driver is out to destroy the lost boy, whereas in reality the lost boy is the protagonist out seeking justice for the death of his mother.
Conventions:
Quick Cuts
Shadows & Low Light
Tension Music
Changes in Camera Shots
Diegetic & Non Diegetic Sounds
The cinematography during a thriller will usually consists of a lot of close up to show peoples reactions, as well as extreme close ups of the protagonist character to demonstrate their emotions and to focus onto props to aid the narrative. The shots will also cut quickly to add to the suspense and maybe shots of silhouettes or shadows to conceal the identity of the antagonist. In which we will be using a lot of throughout our production, each individual in our group already have example of shots that we would like to use.
As well as the editing, there will be a lot of jump cuts. Cross cutting will also be a key point in the editing as it is used to build up the tension which is essential for a thriller. However, continuous editing is used to help the audience engage with the narrative more. Non-diegetic sounds of music are key in any film to help the audience understand the mood. Although in a thriller it adds to suspense and often start at a slow pace and then build up to make the shots more dramatic.
Mise-En-Scène also plays a key role in a thriller and it helps the audience establish the theme. The location will need to fit the narrative and the lighting will often be low key. The cotumes will usually vary depending on the character: the antagonist will usually be dressed in dark clothes to mask their identity and to set the scene and the protagonist will be in ordinary clothes so that the audience can infer that they’re normal.
The audience will always expect a twist due to the build up of tension. Typically a thriller will build up expectations, drop them and the rebuild them so the audience experiences a rollercoaster of emotions throughout. Our film will incur a huge twist, in which we are going to use all of the codes and conventions as accurately as possible to help build up the trust and then the twist will occur!
Sub Genres:
Action Thriller: Visual appeal of explosions and violence. - Due to our small budget we found that this would not be possible to make look effective.
Conspiracy Thriller: Protagonist confronting a large event that only he sees. - We thought that this could be good sub genre to use, but we are putting a twist on things and the protagonist is confronting a problem that only he KNOWS about, not sees. Therefore we are not using a conspiracy thriller.
Crime Thriller: Usually from a criminals POV. - As a group we thought the whole POV idea may get quite boring for the 5 minutes and wanted to involve a more of a variety of shots from other point of views.
Disaster Thriller: Natural disaster taking place. - Just like the action thriller, we thought the maybe it was not possible to show a natural disaster effectively, however during the discussion stage of our narrative we did think that we wanted to show effects of aa natural disaster. However, this idea is now out of the window!
Psychological Thriller: Conflict of mental rather than physical state. - As group we now have our finalised narrative and believe that we are settling with a psychological thriller, we believe that with effective use of the conventions above we could make an amazing psychological thriller with it lao fitting our narrative perfect for the lonely boys mental state after finding evidence from his mothers muder scene to finally gaining justice over her killer!
Supernatural Thriller: Characters may have psychic abilities. - Again, we thought we could not make an effective supernatural thriller..

Treatment Draft:
Throughout the early hours of the morning, a lost boy will be strolling along a deserted road in a winter forest. The weather is bitterly cold, the boy holding himself to withhold any warmth. In the distance glimpses of a car and radio music will be heard echoing through the forest, as it slowly approaches a cab driver is established. The driver spots the lost boy and slowly approaches, he rolls down his window enquires about the boy and where he wants to go and the boy then enters the cab. The boy is clearly observant and looks around revealing empty alcohol bottle scattered around, the boy then indulges into the life of the driver, building up a trusting relationship. The driver seems elevated, almost as if he is happy with a recent accomplishment; he then makes an inappropriate comment about women; which sparks the boys anger. They then arrive at the destination, the boys family home as a young boy where his mother was once murdered. The boy then points to the location and says nothing, the driver immediately noticing something is not right. Flashbacks will then reveal how the boy tracked the driver and himself at the murder scene as a young boy. In the distance, figures then approach the cab as the boy reveals something that he has from the murder scene and the driver knows that there is no getting out of this. The boy is then shown, aware that his plan has been fulfilled.
Character Research:
Roadside follows a very similar structure to our narrative and therefore I researched into how the innocent girl at the beginning is portrayed. She is very reserved and withdrawn in herself at the same time looking extremely exhausted.
I now wanted to further my character research by previewing into films with similar character traits:
Nil By Mouth - Ray Winston
Throughout the film Nil By Mouth the main character played by Ray Winston is the perfect portrayal of Frank Goodman, our cab driver. The disrespectful cockney slang, gangster persona is the perfect picture we want to paint of driver.
Asa Butterfield
It was now time to head to the job centre to see what roles we will be allocated:
WhatsApp O'Clock!!
Its been a long time coming, but we now have our final idea after a long discussion!
Joe brought to our attention that the ending needed more of a juicy ending, he suggested maybe Isaac Wright should kill Frank Goodman, however I personally did not think this was a good idea as it defeats the trait that he is a clever man so I suggested his body goes missing, and Isaac sets this up but doesn't have direct link. We chose to show this through a news report playing over the credits of a "missing body". Joe further suggested the body being found but I personally do not like the idea of this.

Steve Neale: Declares that genres are instances of repetition. However, he adds that difference is essential to the economy of genre as pure repetition would not attract specific audiences. Much of the pleasure of popular cinema lies in the process of "difference in repetition'. For example, recognition, elements, fashion.
This has been explored with classic films including jaws (1975) and more recent films including 28 Days later (2002) and Contagion (2011)
Jonathan Culler: Generic conventions exist to establish contract between creator and the reader so as to make expectations operative, allowing compliance and deviation from the accepted modes of intelligibility. Communication within the context is framework of expression.
I did my first treatment draft back 24/09/17, we have made a lot of small, subtle changes. Therefore, I thought it was time to go back through and annotate to make changes to make my final treatment.
The first rating on the chart starting at Universal, this cetificate meaning that the moving is for everyone. These movies are usually shown in a positive light, no discriminatory language, behaviour etc.
If this was to occur in universal rated movie it is usually extremely mild, disapproved of and if justified within the context for example: comedic references.
The PG certificate stands for parental guidance for children around the age of 8 years and older. The movies are genuinely shown in a positive light still and discriminatory language and behaviour has to be in either educational context to be acceptable.
If bad language appears it is usually extremely mild or moderate without details being illustrated and therefore why parental guidance throughout is needed.
This certificate 12a, shows that someone under the age of 12 can see the movie. However, there is also another rating of 12 which means you have to be at least 12 years of age to watch the movie.
In 12a rated movies language may be moderate as well as some strong language depending on the context it is being used in. Furthermore, it may encounter some brief sexual activity.
Some scenes may be disturbing but overall the movie shouldn't be.
The 15 certifies that you must be at least 15 years of age to watch
this movie.
Discrimination throughout is now increasing as racial, homophobic language may occur. Drugs and alcohol may be taken but it must not encourage misuse. Very strong language may now occur but depending on the manor it is used, sexual intercourse (however not in strong detail) is portrayed and threat and horror is most likely to occur as well as strong violence but not in horrific detail throughout the movie.
The certificate of 18 certifies that the individual must be of the age 18 or over due to the explicit content throughout these movies.
Maternal is in breech of criminal law through criminal offence, it appears to us to risk, harm, portrayal of violence or dangerous acts like illegal drugs use etc.
They include sexual intercourse to sexual violence and other harmful activities and more explicit and detailed activity of violence, language and horror scenes.
From my research of the BBFC I then opted for a discussion with my group to settle what we would rate our 5 minute short film. We discussed what out overall message of the film would get across to our viewers; and already knowing the speculation in our society today around unlicensed cab drivers and sexual assault, we thought that our short film may be offending to some viewers and therefore straight away opted for the higher age ratings. However, we know that our short film isn't going to be overly exposing of sexual assault and murder and therefore thought that the rating of 18 may be too high. We will be using props like drugs, cigarettes, alcohol etc and therefore knew we wouldn't meet the guidelines of the 12a rating and as a group we therefore opted for the age rating of a 15.
Both of these are a perfect representation of the shot I would love to get when approaching Issac on the side of the road. The dark, gloomy, crisp cold weather here sets the scene perfectly and suits to setting that we have inspired to get all along.
After our adventure, I came home and thought about a possible shot list that we could use during the opening of our film. We have also arranged to meet up as a group during the half term to shoot some practise shots preliminary to the real filming too test shoot to see if what we want to do will be successful. Organisation is key here!!
Possible Shot List:
POV - Frank in the car/Isaac's perspective. Medium & Long shots to display the long road. Close Ups of the characters faces to show the emotion during the opening scene. We will also be using panning shots for example in the car scene to reveal any alcohol bottles etc. Shot from mirrors in the car, to build up the tension between characters. As a group we have never filmed in a car before and therefore thought it would be key to meet up and practice in the small tight space that we have to film along with how hard it is going to be depending on the road users at the time of filming.
During todays lesson as a group we came up with a 6 week plan, to make sure that we have everything done in time for the Christmas holidays. We are planning to have our film complete by Friday 1st December and therefore in between we have a short tight schedule to get everything complete from filming to editing! We also need to keep up to date with our blogs in time.
Here is a visual representation of the next few weeks:
During todays lesson as a group we wanted to finalise our script and our shot lists and therefore delegated jobs. Me and Emily thought that we should take control over the shot list as we will be the ones mostly behind the camera during filming and therefore planned out a shot list draft:
Throughout the early hours of the morning, a lost boy will be strolling along a deserted road in a winter forest. The weather is bitterly cold, the boy holding himself to withhold any warmth. In the distance glimpses of a car and radio music will be heard echoing through the forest, as it slowly approaches a cab driver is established. Character Research:
I would like our main protagonist to be portrayed as a very innocent character during the beginning scenes to throw the audience off who really is the protagonist as the driver will seem to be the hero during the first few minutes until the trust relationship is broken down by Isaac Wright in the end for the better. (Gaining justice for his mothers death)
Roadside follows a very similar structure to our narrative and therefore I researched into how the innocent girl at the beginning is portrayed. She is very reserved and withdrawn in herself at the same time looking extremely exhausted.
During the beginning of our 5 minute film I want our antagonist to give off a first impression that puts the audience on edge, give off a sense that he is unapproachable, very cockney yet scary.
During roadside the driver comes across very intimidating and is dressed in old, ragged clothes. I would like our antagonist to personally follow the same structure, the intimidating dominant first impression that he makes is how I want to the cab driver to seem during the first moments.
I did some further research into other thriller films and now wanted to decide on our characters names and ages. As a group, we discussed, our first thoughts were Charlie for our protagonist as it seems innocent but could have deep personality. However, personally I didn't like the simplicity and wanted something more intellectual we then came to the decision on Issac Wright as we believe this name would represent a smart, yet mysterious character. His main traits consisting of: Intelligence, mysterious, shy, geeky yet very smart and tactical with his decisions which we will show at the end of the short film when everything is explained.
Next, we needed to come up with a name for our antagonist, however this time round was much easier as we all know we wanted a typical cockney, popular British name to represent the typical "gangster" image. We came to the decision on Frank Goodman, the first name typical Londoner name and the last name being extremely ironic as he is the antagonist in our short film.
I now wanted to further my character research by previewing into films with similar character traits:
Nil By Mouth - Ray Winston
Asa Butterfield
During films like Hugo ect, he has a very clever persona, yet shy ect. This is how we was our Character Isaac Wright to come across: an inner shy individual yet very clued up and always has a plan.
Organising our group roles was very easy, everyone already had an idea into what we were interested in and what we are capable of. Joe himself does acting therefore we already knew our main protagonist would be acted from himself. Me and Emily both have macbooks (luckily) which we could have easy access to acting outside of school. I am also extremely interested in filming from last year and would love to be in charge of the cinematography side of things. However, we will not always limit to these roles and if anyone has an idea for extra input then we can allow this! This will help make the film be the best it can possibly be!
Character Profiles:
JAE Casting Agency:
Jae Casting was a group idea to spice up the way in which we obtained our actors for our film! We therefore produced a casing agency in which I partook as the caster and looked for the best actors out there. Part 1 showing the phonecall from the production company coming to JAE casting agency:

Location Location Location..
Today, October 3rd, we all got together as a group to location hunt where we are going to set our short film. It was hugely successful as we found both locations that we are going to use. We went to Epping Forrest, Chigwell, Stapleford Abbots, Romford to search for the perfect location as we do not want to stick with the easy options..
However, originally I did not want to use a forrest road area as I didn't think it would set the scene. For example, why would Isaac Wright be in a forrest alone in early hours of the morning? I therefore thought that maybe we should use a high street of some sort, a more popular area like Loughton high street:

I therefore thought that maybe we should use a high street of some sort, a more popular area like Loughton high street:
Despite my original thoughts, after location hunting with the remainder of my group I was convinced that in reality the use of a high street will not give off the same effect. Firstly, it will be hard to find a high street to be isolated (even in the early hours of the morning) as well as too much going on to get the character focus that we desire during the opening.
Here is a vlog of the adventure:
The Forrest: This is the basic forrest road we would want to use during the opening scene of the boy along the road before getting picked up. Here we want represent a damsel in destress in a lost forrest road and therefore want the open (non secluded), early morning winter road. We therefore went out looking for the perfect road to use:
Miller Lane, Chigwell: This is a screenshot from the vlog that we produced when location hunting; after trail and error in surrounding areas like High Beach, Romford, Chigwell ect we found the perfect location! It wasn't too secluded so we can achieve high lighting as we will be filming in the car and therefore need a lot of natural light.
A house: We had the basic idea of using a normal house, nothing to extravagant! To set the scene that they're a normal working class family before Isaac Wright's mother was murdered. Therefore we thought long and hard into the decision and thought that Joe's house was the best one to use.
Joe's House, Hainault: This is the finalised idea to use this home as it represents the perfect setting we want. This setting is where we will be getting Frank Goodman to take Isaac Wright and inside the home is where we will be showing flashbacks using Joe's little brother.
A preview into the home we will be using where the flashbacks from Michelle Wrights murder scene occurred 10 years previous to the present day.
Costume:
Are you really a girl if you don't have this melt down before everytime you go out?
We are not going to be having this problem when it comes to filming therefore we need to get organised now! Here is a little something we did to help decide...
I indulged into some mind maps to get me thinking on what I want our characters to be wearing throughout before we discussed as a group:
Firstly, for our main protagonist I did some character research into characters like Asa Butterfield to see what they wore throughout movies and knew that I had to link the clothing to the age that we re opted for. Therefore, Isaac will be young 20's so I think that he should be wearing very casual clothes but not too rough looking because he is extremely intellectual at the same time as being working class. Firstly, I opted for the t-shirt and jeans look to make him look like any other ordinary young man walking the streets therefore when Frank Goodman approaches him nothing stands out to be out of the ordinary for him.
However, during the flashback scenes we will be using a young Isaac Wright and personally I think he should wear either pyjamas to show he was comfortable in his surroundings before Frank Goodman ruined his whole childhood. On the other hand, maybe school uniform to show his young innocence.
For our main antagonist on the other hand I opted towards more or a rough look. After character research into typical cockney characters like Danny Dyer I thought it was crucial to go for a more dirty, ragged look. Therefore, during mind mapping I thought he should be wearing dark clothing to add to the mystery and his dark history of assault and murder.
Lastly, I had to do research for the mother during the murder scene as she plays a key role as to why all the conflict occurs throughout. I wanted to make sure that her working class was still transparent through her outfit and therefore do not thing we should opt for anything too classy like heels. However, I think that her femininity should show throughout so wearing a dress with tights etc should add to this. Something red to the outfit too to add to seduction that we want to represent.

Rick Altman: He has a semantic/syntactic approach to film genre. His aim was to problematise the discussion of genre within film studies, here he recognised that the development of film studies had seen a change from genre as history to an approach which often used the film industries. He pointed out that genre up until the 60's was discussed in either inclusive or exclusive terms. Where critics would refrain a tactical sense to genre. He produced a book in 1999 where he admits that the semantic/syntactic is lacking crucially concepts, for example the audience.
Audience:
Reception Theory: Is a version of a reader response literary theory that emphasises each readers interpretation in making meaning from a text/movie. Stuart Hall was the min proponents of the theory, first developed in an essay in 1973 called "Encoding and decoding in the TV discourse" which focuses on the scope of negotiation and opposition from the audience. This mens that a text from book, moving or other creative work is not passively accepted by an audience it is critiqued by the reader/viewer.
Uses and Gratifications Theory: This is the approach to understanding why and how people seek out to media to satisfy there needs. UGT is an audience entered approach in understanding the mass communication. This theory focuses on what people do with media instead of other theories that focus more on what does media do to people. This is more based on socio-psychological communication which enhances knowledge, relocation, social interactions. This theory assuming that audience has power over the media consumptions.
Narrative:
Todorov Theory: 1. A state of equilibrium at the outset when everything is normal.
2. A disruption of the equilibrium by some actions when an event or action ruins this.
3. A recognition that there has been a disruption and needs to be fixed.
4. An attempt to repair the disruption
5. A reinstatement of equilibrium or a new equilibrium is created.
Our film doesn't really follow the theory of Todorov, as the structure shown above is completely opposite to what we have decided.
Strauss Levi: He offers the idea of binary opposition and the idea that things are directly parallel nd opposite to help understand and fuel each other together. For example, things, objects and qualities. This can be applied to films and characters within the media, for example the protagonist and antagonist. Where throughout our film we are using the idea of binary opposites through the use of chapters, Isaac Wright the more shy intelligent young protagonist and Frank Goodman the more cockney old man.

Props!!!
As time is quickly ticking, deadlines are creeping and filming is closer than ever I thought that maybe it was time to indulge into what props we are going to be using! Therefore today during lesson I opted to research into popular props that are used in thrillers:
Continuously throughout thrillers the most common props used are guns, weapons for example. I researched into popular thrillers like Taken, Hitman, John Wick and Spectre. However, throughout our film we want to be more subtle in the way of violence; for example we are now using morse code which is more innocent.
Another prop that I found extremely effective during the course of many thrillers were the use of cigarettes. For our antagonist (Frank Goodman) we would like to portray him in a very cockney, Londoner manor and therefore I believe that the cigarette will really compliment his chapter.
After researching into thrillers I thought more about the props that we are going to need in our movie that we may need to purchase to make it look professional. My first thought being that we have a cab, we will be using my car for this but it doesn't look initially like a cab (My ford fiesta, fifi). Therefore, I took to amazon and searched for "cab essentials" here I found:
We have a strict budget of 50 pounds for our short film and therefore had to be sensible with what we chose, I came across this magnetic taxi sign that we could place on top of my car for the opening scene which could be extremely effective and give the audience an insight straight away to know that it is a cab service.
Secondly, I realised that Uber's usually have a sign in the top corner of the window to show they're licensed cab drivers and therefore I opted to a tax disk holder and we will create something to go inside.
Next I realised that we will need empty wine and beer bottles for in the back of the cab to display Frank Goodman's rebellious attitude and his "hard man" profile.
Now this is where it got fun!! We needed to make sure that Frank Goodman look old and I therefore looked up tutorials on how to make someone look old with makeup. We therefore will be using contour to create the effect of wrinkles. However, to add to the effect we will be using liquid latex to build up the wrinkles making Tommy look even older!!
Here is the tutorial I watched to help me with my ideas:
Treatment:
XFactor Auditions for the best treatment:
I did my first treatment draft back 24/09/17, we have made a lot of small, subtle changes. Therefore, I thought it was time to go back through and annotate to make changes to make my final treatment.
I then did some further research into how to write up the perfect treatment. Using the basics from last year, I went back to scratch and first gained knowledge into what actually is a treatment: which I found to be a description of the whole story focusing on highlights. I then gained knowledge on how one should be written: in present tense of the entire story, key scenes and some dialogue. Now what should be included: Introduction to key characters, main conflicts, final conflict and the resolution.
Therefore, after going over my first draft and gaining more knowledge I made our final treatment:
My Final Treatment:
On a crisp winters morning, around 6am, a disoriented young man is
strolling cautiously along a deserted road in an empty forest. With the vibrant
sun rising and the weather bitterly cold, Isaac Wright held himself to withhold
any warmth he possessed. Dressed in casual jeans and a jumper, he heard
distanced glimpses of a car and radio music from Sam Cooke echoing through the
forest, as it slowly approaches a cab driver is established. The driver spots
Isaac and slowly approaches, he rolls down his window enquires about the boy
and where he wants to go and Isaac then enters the cab after he realises he
clearly has no other choice. The boy is clearly observant and quickly notices
the quality of the cab, revealing empty alcohol bottles scattered around, Isaac
then indulges into the life of the driver, building up a trusting relationship.
As Isaac explains his destination, he will be using morse code on his leg,
which is later reveled in flashbacks, along with a man in the forest, unseen at
the time the cab drove past him. The driver (Frank Goodman) seems elevated,
almost as if he is happy with a recent accomplishment; oblivious to Isaac’s
knowledge. He then makes the final inappropriate comment about women, which
then sparks Isaacs anger. Abruptly, arriving at the destination, Isaac’s
previous family home as a young boy where his mother was once murdered. Frank
waits for Isaac to exit the car but he doesn’t leave. He stays silent and
frozen, watching Frank intensively, Frank becomes extremely unsettle and
confused by Isaac actions. Isaac then points to the location and says nothing,
interrogating with his stare. In fact, Frank Goodman has a history of sexual assault
and murder of innocent women but has never been caught, Isaac is aware of this
due to the loss of his mum and his tracking he has done ever since.
Flashbacks will then reveal how Isaac tracked Frank and himself at
the murder scene as a young boy around 9 years old, he will be creeping down
the stairs in terror at the sound of his mother screaming in a blurred tone
from the living room. Through the gaps in the stair case young Isaac will
reveal his dead mother surrounded by drugs and pills. This reveals how Frank
Goodman made the murder scene therefore look like a suicide to keep his actions
secret. Frank Goodman will then be shown telling young Isaac how his mother
deserved it, and using the exact line that he said in the cab which triggered
Isaacs anger; again shown in flashbacks. After the flashbacks it cuts to Frank
realising there is no getting out of this; Isaac then shown aware that his plan
has been fulfilled.

The British Board of Film Classification is an independent, non-governmental body which has classified cinema films since it was set up in 1912 and videos/ DVDs since the Video Recordings Act was passed in 1984.
For the certificate rating for our film I did further research into different ones. For this research I looked onto the main BBFC website- http://www.bbfc.co.uk/. On here it told me the different ratings and the reasons why, from here me and my group was able to base the content and language in our film and decide on the rating.

Title Time!!
As filming was getting even more closer, today we really want to get our finalised film title! I wanted to research first before we wrote down all our ideas. Last year, as a group we came up with words that described our film well and looked up synonyms to make it more interesting; it did work really well. However, this year I wanted to be even more creative! I went online and researched into making a good title:
The top ten tips I found were: Short, Hint, Craft, Phrase, Key, Understanding, Conflict, Sufficient, Quick & Efficiency.
We then discussed as a group a few ideas and came up with:
Deceit
RevengeA snake in the grass
A viper in the trees
Hidden Identity
Immoral Justice = My personal favourite :)
However, as a group we all have personal favourites which is not good when it comes to choosing therefore we had a discussion, as shown below!

More changes!
We have come up with the final title. We all came to the decision with help from close friends and peers.
Final Title...

The BBFC & Age Ratings:The British Board of Film Classification is an independent, non-governmental body which has classified cinema films since it was set up in 1912 and videos/ DVDs since the Video Recordings Act was passed in 1984.
For the certificate rating for our film I did further research into different ones. For this research I looked onto the main BBFC website- http://www.bbfc.co.uk/. On here it told me the different ratings and the reasons why, from here me and my group was able to base the content and language in our film and decide on the rating.

Today I had a lightbulb moment!! The weather was perfect for how we want it to be during filming of the opening scene to our film. I therefore thought it would be good to visit our location we chose; Millers Lane in Chigwell to see how it is going to look exactly. I got some shots of how we want it to look during the filming of Frank Goodman approaching Isaac:
30/10/17:
Planning & Shot List Drafting:During todays lesson as a group we came up with a 6 week plan, to make sure that we have everything done in time for the Christmas holidays.
Joe on the other hand starting to do the script, however me and emily closely kept an eye on the draft so we could plan our shot list. We have also been adding our ideas into the script!

Survey
Today, I thought about target audience research and wondered just how I need to gain some information. I thought as social media is so poplar right now that survey monkey will help me gain results quick and efficiently! Therefore I produced a survey and put it on my social medias and asked for close family and friends help and then got them to share onwards to their friends and families to gain a wide spread of results! Just what I am looking for :)
Here is a link to my survey that I produced:

Target Audience Research
I did some further research into my target audience to find out if what I have put in plan is going to be effective:
I did face to face interviews with some of my friends from sixth form in video form:
01/11/17:
Practise Shots
Today during our independent studies, as a group we all came together and went to shoot some practise shots and get some screenshots for our storyboard that we are going to produce at the end of the week. We felt that we needed to go to the location on Miller's Lane to get a feel for what it will be when we go to film. We went to the location around 9am, and the road was perfect, not busy at all and it allowed us to get a real good feel for the real thing.
First of all we did some test shots of Joe as he will be our main character acting as Isaac Wright. We shot some reverse over the shoulder shots to show how we want to represent him during the opening.
I then entered the car, as our actor Tommy Levy is not in our group he wasn't with us to act as Frank Goodman; therefore I acted the part for today. I took some practise shots from inside the car from Frank's POV that we might want to use when it comes to filming.
I then drove my car back and forth to see how the shots look using the cab, we liked being able to see the car behind Joe in the distance to add to the suspension of the cab approaching an innocent young man.
We then went to a similar location to the home we will be using to get some shots inside a home for the flashbacks from the little boys point of view (young Isaac Wright). We used an over the shoulder shot to expose the dead body in the living room.
Shortly after we shot from outside the home from when Frank Goodman leaves the home and the dead body inside, we got a good practise shot of how we would like to portray this.
The adventure was extremely successful as now have high hopes for the filming process!!

Survey Reflection
After posting my survey online over my social medias I gained a good response rate of 60!!
First of all, I wanted to gain a personal insight into the gender and age of the participants that partook in my survey, I found that it was mostly took by females and around the ages of under 18 and over the age of 45. I think I gained these results as I uploaded to Facebook and these are the main individuals who use this social network mostly.
Secondly, I wanted to see what these participants were mostly interested in genre wise, I found that a lot enjoyed thrillers, romances and comedies most. Which was useful to me as we are going to producing a short thriller and therefore know that a good target audience for us will be a slightly older generation instead of children. Allowing us to rate out film a 15.
Next, I wanted to take my research further and see what the participants seek mostly from a film, I found out that the most popular thing that individuals look for in a film is a good story line to follow, therefore I took this information on board and shared with my group, we are now focusing on making a very indulging storyline.
Similarly to the previous question, I now wanted to find out if the audience would prefer a resolved ending or a climax ending. As from the very start our group has been extremely unsure on our ending. We have two endings: either ending on back figures approaching the car (a more climatic ending) or a news spread at the end (a more resolved ending) as it explains the story as a whole. As we are producing a short movie and not an opening like last year we have thought that we need a resolved ending and now I have taken my research further and found that more people enjoy a resolved ending.
Focusing more on thriller as a genre (as it is our film) I wanted to see if the participants do in fact like it as a genre and 86% of the people who took part do like thrillers as a genre. We therefore now know that our film could be a good hit with our specific target audience.
Furthermore, I wanted to see what the participants favourite sub genre was to thrillers as we could focus our film on what they enjoy most. We found that the most poplar sub genre was psychological with nearly 40% answering this on the survey. Luckily, we have been focusing on psychological thrillers throughout the whole journey of production of our film.
Lastly, we was unsure as a group if we should just a few main characters portrayed throughout or we needed more to make it indulging for the audience. However, we found that the participants prefer only a few main characters which now allowed us to get cracking with our script.
Lastly, I wanted to see how often our target audience go to the cinema, to see how interested in film they really are. I found our that just over half of them go to the cinema once to five times a year. Overall, I found that my research may not be as effective as it could be as the participants who partook are not overly interested in film as I would've wanted them to be.

Script time!!
Over the long weekend, as a group we have been looking at the first draft of the script. I printed off the first draft and got down some annotations that I individually think we should change. We have a 10 page draft which involves a lot of waffle and not what I would like it to portray. From re reading I believe that we need to make Frank Goodman more cockney and we also need to change the ending of the news report as I think that the news should portray Frank Goodman's missing body in a positive light to portray how criminals in the media always seem to get away with their convictions.
Here is some annotations on our first draft:
10/11/17
Storyboard Drafting
I thought now was about the right time to put together a good story board as filming is only around the corner now. We need a good layout of shots so we know when it comes to filming exactly how I want it to be done.
Today, I went through out practise shots and screenshotted the most important bits throughout. I then put them into a word document and made them a decent size for our large storyboard that I had in mind for us. I then printed them out, but in black and white ready to stick onto a big A1 sheet and annotate round. I believe that I was extremely successful in todays task, as working closely along side Joe to put them in order, stick them down and add the final touches to make it a good storyboard.
Above is the annotated storyboard that me and Joe produced. However, throughout I am standing in for the main character of Frank Goodman, as our actor Tommy was not there to be able to make the shots.
13/11/17:
Equipment Time:
I thought that I better add what equipment that we will be using when it comes to filming as it does play a key role in the production. As a group we produced a creative video to show what we will be using physically:
The camera that we will be using is the 700d, this will provide us with the best possible quality that we can get. Although throughout the group we have cameras and iPhones, the school can provide us with these. When we use these we are also provided with a "RODE" microphone which provides high quality sound at the same time as filming good quality film.
We will be using a "hama" tripod doing scenes like the murder scene flashback, this will provide us with steady footage and a bases for our more still shots.
Rather than when we film panning shots we need something that it malleable to move about and therefore we are going to be using a shoulder mount. So during scenes like the opening scene when we pan around the car it keeps the camera quality steady.
Lastly, the school is providing us with a 64GB memory card to borrow throughout the production of our film, this will hold a lot of footage and if things gets deleted by accident we will always have backup. The good quality SanDisk is a reliable source as well.
14/11/17
Music Time:
As filming is coming into action this week, today as a group we thought it was time to sit down and discuss what music we are going to be using throughout our short film.
We decided that we will be using different music throughout different sections and therefore it needed a lot of time and thought to perfect!
Joe brought a few Frank Sinatra hits but even though I liked the sway tone that it had, I didn't like how mainstream it was. I thought we could be a lot more creative with this.
Emily then presented us a clip from final destination 3:
The music that is being presented in the background of this clip was perfect! As a group first impressions were amazing and we thought it was perfect for our opening scene. The build up nd creepiness that is portrayed in this song was exactly what we wanted as Frank Goodman approached Isaac Wright in the cab. As well as it not being a well known song, this is exactly what I had in mind!
Now we have perfected our opening scene music, we needed more to discuss other music that will be used during flashbacks etc.
However, this was a much longer process as we needed to look for copyright free music that we thought matched the clip: we therefore used websites like:
akmmusic.co.uk
bensound.com
purple-planet.com
To this date, we are still undecided on the other music that we will be using.
Here is a group vlog of us going through the different music and sounds:

Lesson Log:
Today, we have made a large change to our film, we have changed one of the main characters of, Frank Goodman. We have realised now it is time to film that using someone in our class who is not in our group, Tommy, is not going to be efficient as he has a lot of work and filming to do himself. We have always had doubts about using Tommy anyway as he is 17 acting as a 50 year old man.
Therefore, we needed to think who to use. Joe's dad portrays a perfect image of the man we want to be portrayed, therefore we asked him when he is free and if he is up for the role.
He agreed to the role and has arranged a day off of work - we have also made sure that we all could make the day of filming.
Our new actor of Frank Goodman: Mark Flynn

Production Titles
Just when we though research and planning was coming to an end, I was wrong. A major part of this section was incomplete! Its all fun and games filming etc but when you haven't thought of a production name and drafted a few logos, it became a struggle. So instead of doing a typical list I have done a mind map to show the way my brain was working at this moment in time. I had a few ideas, without the groups input, I have drafted down a few ideas and some drafts of logos that follow, you can see this below.
However, I though with some basic drafts I needed to research into some already established names and logos from large companies:
From taking my research further I have discovered that a lot have dark backgrounds with bold colours; this therefore making them stand out a lot. This is exactly what we want, making it something that the audience won't ignore but take some interest in.
Despite this, we knew as a group that wanted to link our production name and logo to our films therefore started to focus our research into thriller, but in a subtle way.
When I was doing the drafting of some titles I liked here are some drafts of logos that Joe has drafted:

Target Audience Research
Today, I worked with the boys on some more target audience research on the right demographic we think link to our thriller idea. I wanted to create a more fun creative video. We therefore all planned something fun, I though of like a game show and Joe came up with the idea to come up with pre determined question and answers to make it more funnier! Waseem comprised and went along with Joe's sense of humour whilst I did the cinematography and edited together the following video:
Week commencing the 20th:
Filming has started!!
This week we have started filming, even though to begin with it was extremely unsuccessful as the props we needed didn't arrive on time so we had to postpone the opening shots, we also forgot the microphone and the actors didn't know the script, this made the first day of filming extremely hard. Therefore, the next time we went out we knew we needed to be so much more organised. Therefore, I got to school early and made sure all the equipment was ready and working for when we left. Emily and Joe prior to filming did a shot list of everything we wanted and being a cinematographer along with Emily we both got some really good shots of what we wanted. This day was extremely successful!!
Filming further took place until the week commencing the 4th of December and here is a vlog of the experience:
When the filming come to an end and editing commenced, I reviewed the footage and used trail and error with the different shots were more effective. Here is a video representing this:

Credits
This week we have started to edit together our film, and its looking so good! (Thank god)
However, now we need to start thinking as a group about credits and our production logos etc. Therefore, today I researched into credits and what will be most effective for our film.
Looking at the genre specifically of a thriller I wanted them to fit with these. Therefore, looking back on my last years film I was in love with what we used last time during the opening and I know I wanted to play a news report over the end credits.

Reviewing
After we all edited together our final product we wanted to get some feedback to see if there were any major changes that we needed to make:
During the video below we discussed with a group of candidates what they liked and disliked and have altered our film around this:
To wrap up our G324 research and planning we wanted to produce a funny video of things that went wrong when filming, here is a video of this all put together!
